Thanks Pearson and Ning, but it just doesn't work

It's been over a year since Ning went over to its plan to change the Ning business model from a community driven free service to a money-driven paid one.  Pearson tried to help by sponsoring educational Nings such as this one that wanted to continue as communities, but the stipulation was that it was at the lowest level, restricted to 150 members only.

This Ning has that many members and could easily have twice as many. Last year we went through the process of going through…

Week 5: VLE, VLN, and ePortfolios

As we have said from the start, this Multiliteracies course has been set out as a berry bush. What any participant does with it is not meant to proceed according to any predetermined conduit.  It has been meant to emulate an open online course concept, where there is some cohesion in the syllabus, but where participants are encouraged to make their own cohesion in conjunction with others in their learning networks, each creating knowledge in constructivist fashion, and according to how much…

Week 3 wrapup - Miniscule open online course theory and ePortfolios

Hi everyone, I'm back in Abu Dhabi.

Thanks Jen for taking care of the shop while I was away.  I think Jen is off on a well deserved holiday now. Dennis has had to drop out as co-moderator. It's Nelba's and my turn to guide proceedings.

George Siemens once told us that his job in directing a MOOC, a massive online open course, was to provide cohesion and content.  It is up to the participants to network and glean knowledge from that content.

I…

multiliterate introductions

Hi everyone, and good morning wherever you are waking up today,

Today we officially start the 2011 EVO sessions

(yaayyy, throw open the blinds! beautiful day!)

Throughout the EVOsphere participants will be writing introductions.  YahooGroup lists like the Multilit one will experience a flurry of them.  There are some nice ones here at this Ning already. It might be hard to read them all. Often participants recoil at the amount of email these generate.

Sadly,…

Just noticed sth funny: Some browsers don't like Tag Galaxy! Today I used Chrome to access it, tried to type in hkjan2010 in the box but couldn't. I could only type the numbers 2010 but not the letters hkjan. I've always used Firefox with no problems. What was the browser you used last Sun?

Hi Vance,
Thanks for your warm welcome. Before being friends in Multiliteracies, we are already Facebook friends. I sent you a message on FB and still waiting for the reply. I am happy that you know Sousse and you like it.
Best regards

I finally Googled The Cluetrain Manifesto -I've enjoyed the foreword and I'm interested in the approach. I'll keep on reading -thanks for the suggestion!!

Thanks for your reply, Vance -I'm reading on, slowly, but interested...

The NING situation came a bit too sudden...a group of teachers (including me) started out a ning just after the EVO sessions finished approximately (most of us met there) and now we're migrating into Mixxt almost for sure -we *are* migrating and Mixxt seems the place. I set it up last night but we haven't told the other members yet, we've just let them know we were looking into alternatives.

Mixxt means I get to virtually move to Chile, as Argentina is not in their menu, but it's easy to use and not too different from Ning...We won't get poked, though! (how's that social grooming????); we'll be saying hi!.

Do you have any plans after August?

Hi Vance,

I'm glad that there was space available for me to join your EVO session.  This will be the icing on my Principle & Practices of Teaching Online certificate that I just completed in 2010.
