Multiliteracies

evo2010mlit

Hi everyone,

No one seems to have started a week 2 discussion in Ning yet so I guess it's my turn to go. Once I've set up this discussion I'll be adding its RSS feed to my Google Reader so I can follow it there. There is some discussion in the YahooGroup about how to do that; e.g. http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/multilit/message/472

In YahooGroups there's also an overview of the three ways content can be PULLED to you:
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/multilit/message/463

These are by
1. Subscribing to RSS feeds in your feed reader such as Google Reader or Bloglines
2. Tagging your own postings or other web content ... evo2009mlit for this group
3. Finding content and tagging what you've found in Diigo or Delicious

In the readings here: http://goodbyegutenberg.pbwiki.com/Week2
You will find a reading about the strengths and weaknesses of folksonomies, which is what results from users setting up their own classifications systems and using these terms as metadata to facilitate search on the Internet. There is then an entertaining discussion between David Weinberger, one of the authors of the tract Cluetrain Manifesto, who argues in favor of bottom up classifications, in debate with Andrew Keen who (you should Google him) has mounted some serious opposition to what he decries as a lack of rigor in the way the web is headed.

There are then some items about Writingmatrix, a project which Nelba Quintana, Doris Molero, Sasa Sirk, and Rita Zeinstejer and I got going with students in order to test what could be done with tagging and aggregation in bringing students together in collaboration. This will introduce you to a practical application of these principles with our students. For more information you can Google Writingmatrix or see the webslides that Jennifer has set up for us at http://www.diigo.com/list/jenverschoor/evo2009mlitweek2

To introduce Google Reader I threw in an article entitled Is Google Making us Stupid. Stephen Downes said that if this were the case he should be an idiot by now. But on the other hand, Stephen is very opinionated, so read the post and form your own opinion.

Below these materials you can see links to many of the tools we've already introduced this week. The idea is to start playing with these to practically begin aggregating content created by and associated with the participants in this course.

You can write your responses and questions regarding the concepts and tools introduced either in the Ning forum or at YahooGroups, or you can blog your ideas, but be sure and tag whatever you can evo2009mlit. The reason for doing this will hopefully be revealed soon.

Hello multilits all!

I started to tag in a new delicious a few days ago, you may find something interesting among my bookmarks. I have just added one article that reminds me very much of The Battle of Books, the ancient and the modern, the one by J. Swift ;-)

I guess it would be great to have time and put all my things together, I started a ning months ago and a pageflake too but I gave both up due to the lack of time or internal motivation ;-(

Dear Rosa,

It is great to know that you are tagging . It took me a while to get used to tag everything on the Internet but now it is easy to find what I am looking for.
Your Delicious looks great!!! What do you think about Diigo?
Let´s hope this session helps you finish the ning and pageflake you started months ago and that your motivation keeps growing.
Warm regards from a really warm Buenos Aires 37 degrees

Hello everyone

Thanks for the information about tagging and Blogging. This is the first time I use RSS and I am still practicing with it, I had some experience using Tags but I did not realize how useful they are. I think I am ready to finish this week tasks.

I wrote a response a few days ago to the Keen/Weinberger debate on my wiki page at http://havingalookatmultiliteracies.pbwiki.com/Joel's-Multiple-Literacies?unlock=true.

I'm using the wiki as a more reflective form of literacy as opposed the Ning, which I see as more interactive. Can I tag the wiki page like a blog to make it more interactive.

Hi Joel,

I'm sure you can tag your wiki posts. I'm reading your posts now and commenting there.

Tell us about it! How are you finding tagging useful? More on this from me later, just now about to listen to Sounds of the Bazaar with Cristina Costa, details: http://goodbyegutenberg.pbwiki.com/Events_Schedule

Tell us your experiences, what are you discovering?

I have just posted some thoughts on the video in my blog :

http://mamez.wordpress.com/2009/02/01/multiliteracies-week-two-semi...

I had commented on the Folksonomies article earlier

http://mamez.wordpress.com/2009/01/20/multiliteracies-week-two/

in a posting in which I seemed to be begging for a straitjacket, and to which Vance made a really soothing and inspiring comment.

I have been tagging websites on delicious, of course in my blog, and thanks to Vance's tutorial I have figured out how to tag wiki entries. I do not know yet how to tag replies to Ning Discussions (or is the discussion itself the only one that gets tagged?)
